The short answer: an E24 on a Bosch dishwasher is a drainage fault, meaning water did not leave the machine in time. It is almost always a clogged filter, a blocked or kinked drain hose, a stuck check valve, or a tired drain pump, not a failed dishwasher.

Bosch monitors how fast water drains, and when it is too slow it posts E24 and holds the cycle. It is closely related to the E22 filter code and is among the most common Bosch faults we clear across Longmont. The fix is in the drain path.

Check the disposer connection: if the drain hose ties into a garbage disposer, a knockout plug that was never removed at installation, or a clogged disposer, is a classic hidden cause of E24 that has nothing to do with the dishwasher itself.

Working the Drain Path

A technician starts at the filter and sump, then follows the drain hose for kinks and blockages, confirms the high loop, and checks the check valve that keeps water from siphoning back. If the path is clear but the pump only hums, the impeller may be jammed with glass or debris, or the pump may be worn. Each is a defined repair.

What the Repair Involves

The filter and sump are cleaned, the hose and check valve are cleared, and the drain pump is tested for flow. A jammed or failed pump is replaced with a a part selected for the approved scope, and the machine is run through a drain cycle to confirm E24 does not return.

Start with the Filter Before Anything Else

If your Bosch throws an E24, spend two minutes on the filter before you spend anything else. It sits at the bottom of the tub, twists out by hand, and needs no tools at all. Pull it, look at it, rinse it under the tap, and put it back. A genuinely surprising share of the E24 calls we are booked for in Longmont kitchens would have been solved right there, and the reason is simple: nobody told the owner the filter existed. It is not mentioned at handover, the manual goes in a drawer, and the machine quietly silts up over several years of hard Douglas County water until the drain path cannot move what it needs to.

If the filter was clean, or cleaning it did not clear the code, the next candidates in order are the drain hose, the air gap if your installation has one, and then the pump itself. Working through them in that sequence matters, because the pump is the expensive one and it is the least likely of the three to be at fault. A pump that is straining against a blockage sounds exactly like a pump that is dying, and replacing it while the restriction is still there just puts a new part under the same load.

FAQ

What Does E24 Mean on a Bosch Dishwasher?
E24 is a drainage fault. The machine could not pump water out in time, usually because of a clogged filter, a blocked or kinked drain hose, a stuck check valve, or a worn drain pump. Clearing the path or replacing the pump resolves it.
Can a Garbage Disposer Cause a Bosch E24?
Yes. If the drain hose ties into a disposer, a knockout plug left in place at installation or a clogged disposer blocks drainage and triggers E24. Clearing the disposer connection is a common fix.
How Is E24 Different from E22?
Both are drainage-related. E22 typically points to the filter and coarse blockage, while E24 points to slow or failed drainage overall. In practice a technician checks the same drain path to resolve either code.
