The short answer: an E15 on a Bosch dishwasher means water has reached the base pan and tripped the anti-leak float, so the machine stops to protect itself. It is usually a small leak or condensation, not a failed dishwasher, and it is a defined repair once the source is found.
Bosch dishwashers have a base-pan float that shuts the machine down if any water collects underneath. It is a safety feature, but it also means a very small leak can stop the machine. E15 is one of the most common Bosch codes we clear in Longmont kitchens, and the work is in finding where the water came from.
What Causes an E15
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Our Fix |
|---|---|---|
| E15 with damp base | Small leak at a hose or seal | Find and repair the leak, dry the base |
| E15 after heavy use | Door seal or spray-arm seal | Inspect and replace the seal |
| E15 recurring | Sump gasket or pump seal | Test the sump and pump seals, replace |
| E15 with no visible water | Condensation on the float | Dry the base, confirm ventilation |
| E15 at fill | Inlet or fill-hose leak | Inspect the inlet path, replace the hose |
Finding the Leak
A technician removes the kick panel, dries and inspects the base pan, then runs the machine to watch where water appears. Common sources are a tired door seal, a spray-arm or sump gasket, a pump seal, or a loose hose clamp. Because the float only needs a small amount of water to trip, the leak is often minor and easy to miss without a methodical check.
What the Repair Involves
Once the source is identified, the failed seal, gasket or hose is replaced with a a part selected for the approved scope, the base pan is dried, and the float is reset. The machine is then run through a full cycle to confirm the base stays dry and E15 does not return.

Why Tilting the Machine Does Not Work
The advice you will find most often online is to tip the dishwasher back to drain the base pan, then run it again. That does clear the code temporarily, and it is exactly why people end up calling us three weeks later with the same fault and a warped cabinet floor. The float in the base does not care why there is water there. It only reports that there is. Draining the pan resets the switch, but whatever put water in the pan is still doing it, and the second time around the leak has had another few weeks to work on your cabinetry. On a dishwasher installed against hardwood or under a stone counter, that is a repair bill that grows while you are avoiding a smaller one.
The other reason to take E15 seriously is that the code is doing you a favour. Bosch built the leak-protection system precisely so that a slow drip becomes a stopped machine rather than a floor replacement. A dishwasher that refuses to run is an inconvenience. A dishwasher that kept running while a hose seeped behind the toe kick for a month is a considerably larger problem, and we have seen both.
