Common Problem

Why Will My Burner Not Ignite?

A gas burner that clicks without lighting, sparks weakly, or leaves one dead spot on the cooktop usually has a simple cause you can check safely, or a spark fault we can repair. Here is how we work through it on high-end ranges and cooktops in Longmont.

The Usual Causes, Simplest First

Most no-light burners come down to the spark and the fuel meeting cleanly. Start with the burner cap: if it sits crooked or was replaced out of alignment after cleaning, the spark misses the gas. Next is a clogged port; food or cleaner can plug the tiny holes where flame should travel, leaving one section unlit. Moisture is a frequent culprit, especially right after a spill or a wipe-down, since a damp igniter shorts and clicks without a strong spark. If the cap, ports and dryness are all good, the fault is usually electrical: a worn spark igniter electrode, a failing spark module, or a burner switch that will not close. Those are the parts we test and replace.

Notes by Brand

Wolf: sealed gas burners use a spark electrode at each burner; a single dead burner is often a cracked electrode or a cap seated wrong, while all burners clicking points to one shorted switch or spark module.

Thermador: star burners rely on a clean center and a correctly placed cap; ports and moisture cause most no-light complaints, with the spark module behind the rest.

Viking and Dacor: pro burners diagnosed by checking the electrode gap, the cap fit and the igniter; some use a re-ignition circuit that needs the module tested.

La Cornue: handcrafted ranges where burner and igniter parts are specific to the model; we source model-specific components rather than substituting.

Miele: gas cooktops surface some faults on the control; the physical causes are still cap, port, moisture and spark.

Safety first: if a burner does not light within a few seconds, turn the knob off so gas does not collect, and let the area air out before trying again. If you smell gas with all knobs off, do not use switches or flames, leave the home, and call your gas utility from outside. Then book a repair.

FAQ

My Burner Clicks but Will Not Light. What Does That Mean?
Clicking means the igniter is sparking but the flame is not catching. The usual causes are a burner cap out of position, a clogged port, moisture after a spill or cleaning, or a weak spark from the igniter or module. If gas flows without lighting, turn the knob off.
Why Do All My Burners Click at Once?
When one burner's switch or igniter shorts, many gas cooktops spark every burner together. Often the cause is moisture or a spill under one cap. Once it dries or the faulty switch is replaced, the others stop clicking.
Is It Safe to Keep Trying to Light It?
No. If a burner will not light after a few seconds, turn it off so raw gas does not build up. Air out the room and try again once. If you ever smell gas with the knobs off, leave and call your gas utility, then book service.
