Thermador has a distinctive engineering personality: the patented star-shaped burner that spreads flame wider than a round one, the Freedom induction surface with no fixed zones, and refrigeration columns that mix and match into a built-in wall. That variety is why Thermador rewards a technician who knows where the brand hides its faults. Cooking appliances speak in F-codes tied to the control and sensor, while the dishwashers share Bosch's E-code platform, and the refrigeration behaves like other high-end built-ins. We diagnose each by reading the code, verifying it against the real condition, and fitting genuine OEM parts. This is everyday work for us across Longmont and the surrounding communities.
The one thing to understand about Thermador is that it is not a single engineering platform. The brand sits alongside Bosch and Gaggenau under the same parent, and it borrows freely: the dishwashers run essentially the Bosch control platform and report the same E-codes, while the cooking equipment uses its own F-code set and the Freedom refrigeration columns are their own design again. A technician who only knows one of those three will misread the other two. It also means parts sourcing has to be done by model and serial rather than by brand assumption, because two Thermador appliances in the same kitchen can come from entirely different parts families.
Models We Service
- Pro ranges: the PRD and PRG Pro Harmony and Pro Grand ranges with star burners, dual-fuel and all-gas.
- Wall ovens: the Masterpiece and Professional series single and double ovens, including steam and speed ovens.
- Cooktops: gas Masterpiece star-burner cooktops and the Freedom induction cooktops.
- Refrigeration: the Freedom built-in columns and under-counter refrigeration.
- Dishwashers: the Sapphire and Star Sapphire dishwashers on the Bosch platform.
The model and serial plate sits on the oven frame, under a cooktop lip, or inside the refrigerator on the sidewall. Send those numbers when you book.
Error & Fault Codes
Thermador uses real, published fault codes across cooking and dishwashing. The cooking side shows F-codes from the GE-derived and Bosch-derived control platforms, and the dishwashers use the Bosch E-code set. Here are the codes we see most and what they actually mean.
| Code | What It Means | Our Fix |
|---|---|---|
| F1 / F2 | Control board or stuck touch key | Test the keypad and control, replace if needed |
| F3 / F4 | Oven temperature sensor open or shorted | Replace the oven sensor, verify calibration |
| F7 | Shorted keypad or membrane | Replace the touch panel |
| E15 (dishwasher) | Water in the base pan, leak sensor tripped | Find and stop the leak, dry the pan, reset |
| E24 (dishwasher) | Drain restricted or blocked | Clear the filter, hose and pump |
| E22 (dishwasher) | Filter or drain fault | Clean the filter, check the drain path |
Common Problems We Fix
- Oven F-codes: sensor and control faults that stop heating or show the wrong temperature.
- Burners clicking: moisture, misaligned caps or a shorted switch on star-burner cooktops.
- Dishwasher E15 and E24: leaks and drainage faults on the Sapphire platform.
- Induction no-heat zones: coil or control faults on Freedom cooktops.
- Refrigeration warming: defrost, fan and sensor faults on Freedom columns.
- Uneven baking: a slowing convection fan or drifting sensor.
The star burner is Thermador's signature and it has a maintenance quirk that follows from its shape. Those extra points give a wider, more even flame spread, but they also mean more ports around the rim, and the outer tips are the first place a boil-over collects. A star burner that lights unevenly, with flame on some points and not others, is usually just carrying debris in a few ports rather than failing. The burner caps also have to seat flat and in their correct orientation; they are not interchangeable between sizes on the same cooktop, and a cap swapped onto the wrong burner during a clean is a common cause of a burner that suddenly will not light properly.
Freedom induction cooktops generate their own category of service call. Because the surface has no fixed zones and detects cookware anywhere on the glass, owners assume any pan will work, and then find that a favourite pot does nothing. That is almost never a fault. The surface needs ferrous cookware with a flat base of sufficient diameter, and a pan that fails the magnet test will simply not be recognised. model-specific faults on these surfaces are different in character: a zone that heats then cuts out is usually a cooling or ventilation issue under the glass, and a surface that shows a control error typically needs the power board diagnosed rather than the coil.
Thermador refrigeration columns bring their own consideration. Because the Freedom units are designed to be combined into a single built-in wall, a refrigerator column and a freezer column often sit side by side behind matching panels, sharing a trim kit but not a refrigeration system. Owners frequently report that half the wall has stopped working and assume the whole installation has failed. It has not. Each column runs independently, so a warm refrigerator beside a perfectly cold freezer narrows the fault to that one cabinet's own fan, sensor or defrost circuit, and the repair is confined to it.
